Rifugio Monte Altissimo

The design idea consists in making the roof the main iconic element of the architectural figuration of the building. A roof made up of three covering strips which are folded with alternating rhythms and which in certain points become a canopy to include the technical terminal of the gondola lift in the same composition. The central ribbon of coverage contains the public access and lift elements (stairs and lift), to reach the first floor and to exit at the top and access the 360° observatory of the natural embankment. The tape of the roof to the south contains on the ground floor the self-service room opening onto the terrace jutting out towards Boario, while on the first floor (mezzanine) it is emptied to make way for the terrace of the à la carte restaurant and on the upper level it houses a covered panoramic terrace. The ridge of this pitch is the highest point of the building, which being emptied, constitutes the element of emotional surprise and greater architectural recognition of the building. The roofing strip to the north covers the main self-service catering room and the westernmost pitch contains the mountain rescue service on the ground floor, while the two guardian's rooms on the first floor. The view from the à la carte restaurant towards the slopes and Pizzo Camino to the north is ensured through the mezzanine opening onto the self-service room. From the upper level it is possible to access a second covered panoramic terrace, under the highest pitch, or reach the 360° observatory of the natural embankment via the high point of the observatory. In this way the panoramic peak on the west side of the summit of Mount Altissimo is directly connected to the accommodation facility, easily accessible even by people with reduced mobility and is configured as a natural extension of the new intervention.
